Brainstorming is researching keywords to determine the ones that will draw the most traffic AND make you the most money. When you write content using these keywords the Search Engines will find you easier. If you are familiar with and use Site Build It! you already know this.
But if you’re one of the many folks that think all you need to do is get a hosting account and put up a quick website and then you’ll get traffic, this may be news to you. Actually it should be BIG news. Brainstorming and keyword research is one of the keys to online success.
Why? Because unless you can find the “sweet spot” in a niche you may end up with too much competition or too little demand (folks searching) to ever draw enough traffic to succeed.
The sweet spot is the place where the keywords have good demand and not too much competition. When you use the right keyword phrases in your content the Search Engines will be far more likely to rank you highly in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) and send you Free traffic. Ka’ Ching!!!
Almost sounds too obvious doesn’t it? But for many this is brand new information.
So how do you Brainstorm and do keyword research?
There’s actually lots of ways.
If you use Site Build It!, they have the Brainstorm It! tool that will give you the exact information you need. For each keyword you enter, they provide the Demand (how many searches), the Supply (how many competing sites that have pages with that keyword), and Profitability (Demand/Supply x 1000). It becomes quite easy to know what keywords to write about on your site.
Here’s how it works…
1. Put in a “seed word”
Brainstorm It! returns all the possible keyword phrases that contain that word and the Demand, Supply, and Profitability. See below for an example.
2. Sort the Keywords
You can sort by Demand, Supply, or Profitability. That gives you a quick idea of the very top words for each category.
3. Use Your Own Intuition
Of course there may be situations where the keyword returned doesn’t make sense for the niche or for your potential audience. You’ll throw those keywords out.
Also you’ll want to use your own marketing sense to think about which keywords really could work and make money. Looking for keywords that show some “buying intention” always makes the most sense. For example, in the golf niche, if someone types in “golf club coupon” you know they are seriously considering a purchase and you would have a better chance of converting that visitor to an actual sale. If they just type in “golf club” you don’t know if they are looking to buy or just “tire clicking” for fun information about their hobby. This is the kind of thinking that separates successful online marketers from those who never make a dime.
Other Ways To Research Keywords
The heart of keyword research is knowing your visitors and your niche. You want to start by thinking about which keywords your potential visitor would put into the SEs to find you and your solution.
Once you understand that your visitor tells you their intention by the keyword phrases they use you’ll become a professional online marketer. Your prospect is literally raising their hands to tell you what they need and what their problems are. That’s what makes online marketing so great!
The secret is to get your site listed high on the search results page and to have a compelling “ad” that helps searchers understand you have what they need. So studying and analyzing keywords is the first step in this marketing process.
Of course the simplest way to do this research is to go to Google and start typing in keywords and keyword phrases that you think your prospects would use. Take a look at the number of search results for each keyword. This is your competition for that keyword. Be sure to put your keyword phrase in quotes to make sure that exact phrase is used on the sites that come back.
Also be sure you understand the difference between the free and the paid ads that come back on the Results Page. Lots of paid ads means the keyword phrase is profitable. Otherwise people would not be paying for those keywords. Take a look at all the top sites that come up for both the free, organic listings and the paid listings. This is your competition and will give you a general sense of what you’ll need to do to compete in that niche for that keyword.
In our next post we’ll talk more about other tools you can use to research keywords and find that sweet spot for your niche.
