A Word (or Question) About Keywords

by Amy from www.Passion-of-Bavaria.com on April 21, 2009

While building my website with SBI!, the importance of keywords in writing content was totally new to me. Little did I know the power certain words and phrases had in effective web page content and in attracting traffic to my website.

When I first used SBI! Brainstorm It in January, I collected a lot of keywords that I thought had great potential.  Some words had low Value Demand or Profitability numbers, but I liked my words and kept  them in my Master Keyword List anyway.

Next came writing content using the best keywords.  One topic I wanted to write about is an event that will occur next year.  The numbers are not great right now, but I anticipate an increase in searches and I want to position my website to meet the demand.  Whether that is an effective strategy or not, I don’t know….

Anyway, I recently revisited some of my keywords on the topic.  In January, One keyword (phrase) “Oberammergau Passion Play” had the numbers: VD=412, RS=177, P=2328. Good enough to work with, I thought.  A new keyword search in Brainstorm It! For the same term resulted in the numbers: VD=713, RS=177, P=4028. Much better! With the improved demand and profitability numbers, maybe more visitors will come to my site.

Then I checked another important keyword, “Passion Play Tickets”. In January, the numbers were: VD=193, RS=160, P=1206. Not great, but I wanted to use it. Now the numbers are dismal: VD=22, RS=160, P=138. I didn’t expect that. Do I bother using that as the specific keyword, or is it time to find a better keyword to use?

Maybe I’m overanalyzing, but do keyword search result numbers typically vary over time? Or are they normally static? I don’t want to obsess over numbers, but is it a good idea to do “keyword maintenance” on web pages?  I hope those more experienced at building a website may have some keyword advice.

As I learn more about the business of buidling a website, more questions arise. In the meantime,  like the Tortoise with BAM, I will keep working on my website.

P.S. Rick is helping me convert my website, www.Passion-of-Bavria.com to his 3-column template. Wow, What a difference! Once I finish the pages and uploaded on to SBI, I will let you know how it went. Stay tuned.

Amy,
Yes- you will find that keyword numbers do fluctuate. I always think it is good to check a few places to get a gut reaction on what might be good, but don’t make yourself too crazy. I like to check the Google Adwords keyword tool to get an idea of what advertisers will pay for a keyword as one benchmark. Of course, Brainstorm It is an awesome tool, but these other bits of info do support the decision to take my time in writing pages. Rick has also taught us to do a quick Google search for the keyword phrase and see what comes up- what types of pages, and if there are paid Google ads for the term (Adwords advertisers that pay for listings in the search returns).

I suspect that your fluctuations re Oberammergau Passion Play have something to do with the timing of when keyword data was updated in relation to the actual Easter season. Prior to Good Friday, i would guess that Passion Play tickets would probably be in greater demand than after Easter (but I am not 100% sure). Since Easter’s date moves every year, I would think that the month prior to Easter (perhaps when Lent begins??) might be a good thing to get a span of dates for, as that might be the best time to promote tickets. You could write the box office and ask when their busiest time is for selling tickets perhaps (???)

Usually, even if I don’t keep them in my MKL year round, I will do some Christmas keyword searches in November and December to see what comes up. I export to an Excel spreadsheet and keep to refer to, then I think about writing some pages pertaining to these KW’s by summer’s end in hopes of capitalizing on the next season’s traffic. Just something you might try if there are seasonal big interest topics for your niche.
